Class observation – Dr Pollock, Grammar 4b, Thursday 8/27, 1000-1050hrs, Zoom.

Covered: Phrasal Verbs

Continuation and refresher of phrasal verbs (from previous class session), teacher asked for example sentences; he started with a bit of pressure to get a quicker thinking response, but also showed patience and involvement. Then, inseparable phrasal verbs, using a worksheet, followed by separable phrasal verbs using a similar worksheet.  The worksheets not only showed the rules but also gave examples.  As a closer to the last ten minutes of class Dr. P created breakout rooms for the students to come up with a mock conversation to plan a social gathering using separable phrasal verbs.  At the end he cut it off and did not cover the students activity, instead they will continue in tomorrows class.  I noted how the rules and structures of English have already sunk in with the students, and that much of the teachers effort was also focused on engaging them and also engaging them with a feeling of rapidity.  Although phrasal verbs were the lesson, teacher targeted specific student responses where other grammatical rules that had been learned popped up in today’s lesson and employed them as refreshers, corrections or extensions of the rules of English.  Also, Dr. P admitted to not knowing a specific technicality that a student asked and expressed his desire and goal to research and learn it himself and to reciprocate it with his class.
