 Class Observation – Mr. Ryan - Reading 4 – 08/31/20, 11:00-11:50 AM, ZOOM

The course was a continuation of the previous one in which students have a reading log with short stories. Mr. Ryan offered the students three options for a short story to cover for the day. The teacher provided the students with a brief summary of each short story and gave them a few minutes to decide which story to focus on. The students voted unanimously to focus on a story called “Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen”. The teacher then played a 15-minute video which narrates the story from start to finish. The students were told to take notes on the story and be ready for some review questions.  After the video was complete, Mr. Ryan had a list of prepared questions in order to check the student’s understanding. The questions varied from basic plot line ideas, to connecting the story to personal experiences. He also introduced opinion based questions to get more engagement out of the class. After the student answered a question Mr. Ryan would follow up with more questions to further test the students’ understanding. The focus was more on understanding and communicating thoughts. Mr. Ryan would occasionally chime in and correct pronunciation but primarily seemed focus on the students’ ability to process and express thoughts. Finally, Mr. Ryan used a website (Kahoot game) in order to have the students “compete” and answer 20 questions that appeared on the screen. This game was focused on the previous weeks reading assignment. Each student then was rewarded points for the correct answer as well as the speed in which they provided it. This allowed for a little bit of fun competition which the students seemed to enjoy.

  1. Good Detail! I like that the professor added something else in with the readings such as a video to match. We all know that the story and the film are rely the same, but it helps to have context of some of the written with a visual and audio component to help along. It helps with the ability to get faster at and more understanding of what is being told in a story.
