Class Observation – Tim Ryan – Listening 1 – 09/02/20, 2:00-2:50 pm, ZOOM
The class started with Mr. Ryan laying out the plan for the class that day. Next he asked the students to list the things they have been listening to/watching this week. They did it together as a class and went one by one. Each student described a television show/movie that they have watched lately. Mr. Ryan further pushed each student to elaborate on their response by asking for more details about each particular show/movie. This allowed the students to talk openly and answer questions, he did not necessarily correct every grammatical mistake but allowed them to talk through and express their thoughts. After going through every student and discussing each viewing Mr. Ryan changed topics. He repeated a phrase three times and asked the students to transcribe it. This allowed them to practice their listening and spelling. The students then put up their transcriptions and Mr. Ryan helped correct spelling/word choice and voice. This allows the students to develop an ear for the language. Then the students were paired together and asked to paraphrase the statement that was transcribed. They then got together as a class and submitted their own versions of the paraphrased statement. Mr. Ryan went through each one explaining what was correct and incorrect about each. He discussed sentence structure, word choice and passive versus active voice. Finally, the class wrapped up with a discussion of differences between American classrooms and classrooms in other cultures. Each student contributed one similarity or difference from their own respective cultures.
As many of us have been stuck at home lately I imagine it was a little easier for the students to do this one. What kind of movies, shows or songs did they come up with? The first American movie I watched that made sense to me because I had finally gotten caught up in language was "Jurassic Park". I still had problems speaking, but everyone was talking about that movie. So, I had much practice speaking as I had something I could speak about confidently, and the rest started falling into place. This happens with anything we enjoy; we talk about it. As these students may go back to their media source over and over again in their lives the lessons learned by recording and correcting themselves should be good motivators for the long term.
