Today I observed Olivia James Composition class. I specifically observed her working with a student on their graphic organizer for their work on their personal narrative essays they are working on for the course. It was interesting to see this as a progress check on the student to make sure they are on the right track and make sure they are making progress on their work. I think the graphic organizer works well for the students since it is visual aid and helps, they visually see how they are going to structure their writing. Additionally it was interesting to see how if a student didn’t understand a word the instructor was using she made sure to find a good definition to explain it so that the student could understand the point the instructor was trying to get across.
Graphic Organizer for essay writing is a new concept to me; that it's been given graphic elements, not the organization behind the essay, teachers would just tell us and have us write it as notes, sort of like in lecture this Tuesday. Also, a very different lesson from the one I observed for Prof. James. She had taught about giving credit in written work, citations and sources and such, and also how it could lead to plagiarism. She also talked about how a university handles plagiarism, and it is up to a 'court' of faculty that judge whether a student truly plagiarized.
