Today I observed Felicia Ciappetta Reading Class. This was quite an interesting class to observe how to get students reading English and involved. The use of having students reread the article multiple times seemed a good way to get them exposed t different vocabulary. It was clear that some students had a better understanding of the article but having them read it was exposing them to vocab and practice that they otherwise wouldn’t have. Also, the questions in the margins was a way to have students think about what their reading that way they can also absorb more vocab. The structure was generally putting students in groups and the bringing them back for feedback to ensure that they are understanding some of the reading and then back into groups to work together on comprehension questions.
Yeah, the repetitive article reading is what we went over in lecture Thursday. It sounds intensive, with additional info in the margins; I wonder if that helps in allowing in more new information not part of the reading itself, making it less demotivating. I've thought about how a class could be worked by repetitive group-work and back to teacher-work cycles.
