Tutoring session – tutee: H. Kim, Wednesday 9/2, 1530-1630hrs, Zoom.

Covered: contemporary and colloquial English usage

First tutoring an adult online in English.  I learned Hang-ah is Korean and in the US for English Studies.  She is an elementary school teacher and has to sometimes teach English, and wants to be better at it for her students and a bit of oomph for her future career opportunities.  She wanted to practice speaking and reading, and I judged her to be at the high-intermediate level.  What we ended up doing was reading and discussing some of the concepts and some new words form the book “Wonder”, R.J. Palacio.  We got thru about eight pages with discussion and covered such concepts as ‘making too big a deal’ or ‘cracking up’, amongst others; and plenty of new definitions such as extraordinary, cleft and palate, anomalies, hysterical and several others.  Her English skill is strongly developed and I would say it suits the needs of a teacher of English who isn’t a native English speaker.  But I saw much of how some simple euphemisms and turn-of-phrases elude even the best students.
