Conversation Partner – Qiaochu Wang, Friday 9/11, 1300-1400hrs, Zoom.

Covered: introduction/first meet; needs, desires, experiences.

 

My first conversation with great.  Both of my conversation partners are better traveled than I am.  Hongru has been in more places in my native Europe and Qiaochu has visited more places in the US than I have.  Qiaochu is a pianist, having gotten her degree at Kent State in Ohio, and now she’s at FSU for a PhD in art administration.  I hadn’t considered how the performing arts could lead to a PhD.  Although her English study has an education and professional aspect to it, she also wants to learn English better for the more intrinsic stuff.  We talked about a couple of movies and about some contemporary classical music groups, such as 2Cellos.  I look forward to our next conversation, where I will encourage her to lead the conversation more.

CP 10/9/20

Today I met with Marcia. She talked about how she is working on her applications for different graduate schools. She talked about how she applied to some schools in South Korea and other schools in Canada. She mentioned how it is exhausting to work on all these applications. I then started discussing with her how I always wanted to have a deep southern accent. She was shocked to hear this since she has always tried to overcome her accent in English. I talked to her about how it makes you sound different and adds diversity. After that, we ended up talking about the TEFL internship program and how she thinks Dr. Rios is a really good teacher. She thinks that his ability to understand where the students are coming from really makes him an effective teacher.
