Class observation – Prof Ryan Flemming, Listening 4a, Thursday 9/3, 1400-1450hrs, Zoom.
Covered: schedule and upcoming quiz; culture of Socratic classroom; Zoom etiquette
This continued a discussion from the classes previous meeting. Professor Flemming laid out a future class schedule and informed the class of a quiz, and what it would be on. He showed the class how an event – such as informing about a future quiz or examination – is given by how the professor sees fit; it could be a full on explanation of how many questions, what type, where they were found in the course of study, etc., all the way to the opposite – which is the teacher just saying there’s a quiz next week or even pop-quiz. Another set of aspects of the western classroom focused on the larger ways of thinking, classical thinking, the ideas of doubting, questioning and weaknesses or strengths of an argument. An interesting closing to the lecture was a discussion of zoom etiquette; included were slides shown made for teachers in the new COVID-age classroom.
