Class observation – Prof Olivia James, Speaking 4b, Thursday 9/3, 1300-1350hrs, Zoom.

Covered: Socratic vs Confucian learning philosophy; plagiarism

During this lecture an announcement was made by Dr. Pollock of an international forum on campus the following day; a coffee hour and snacks to promote international education.  Plagiarism was a large part of the days class.  In some non-western educational settings plagiarism, as the western system knows it, is much gentler; the idea that the professor knows what the student read is enough to not need citations or bibs.  From this was discussed the process of investigating and dealing with plagiarism at FSU, the “court” and the school official in charge of investigating violations of academic standards.  In addition, concepts such as notion of ownership, since the time of Columbus, or benefit of the doubt, which places the burden of proof on the accuser.  The discussion focused more on the philosophical and theoretical aspects of western education culture.
