Tutoring session – tutee: Hang-ah 5, Wednesday 9/23, 1330-1430hrs, Zoom.
Covered: future meetings, reading and new concepts, phrases, vocabulary.
This was more of an intense reading and speaking session. At least I planned it that way, but much stoppage due to something new for my tutee at least once a page. I was surprised by this since my tutee is really good at English. I’ve had college teachers from China and India, professionals in higher ed and they didn’t speak as well as she does. Yet the concepts, terms or complexities that show themselves as something entirely new for the reader of a middle-school fiction can be as unexpected and mysterious for a native English student of middle-school age as it is for ESL learners. As I am looking not only at a government sponsored assistant teacher position in Japan, but also at private schools where adults make up a large portion of the student body, I appreciate having some forewarning of the immediate stop something new in English could do to an ESL learner. Something I took away from this session. We really focused on reading since we’re almost out of time and not even a third of the way in yet.
