Tutoring session – tutee: Hang-ah Kim, Thursday 9/9, 1530-1630hrs, Zoom.
Covered: reading and general idioms and phrases not immediately clear in context or meaning.
Today’s session with Hang-ah went much smoother than the previous one. I had prepared more toward what she needed since I asked her last week, and I focused on my speaking clearly and not too fast. I learned a little more about her desire to become a full English teacher in her home school. We started with a few lines of puns from the book we’re reading together, since the flexibility of words allows for context and meaning to change. It was funny, a character in the book is Mr. Tushman, and the puns resulting play with behind, rear-end and bum. I employed screen sharing with a premade word doc using the puns, the words themselves and all their meetings. And generally, we just mostly read and let her point-out what wasn’t clear to her, whether it was new vocabulary or colloquially or culturally loaded writing. We also decided to extend our meetings to an hour and a half so that I can get in the time assigned.
