TS #1 Abdulazziz September 3, 2020 7pm-8pm
My first lesson with Abdulaaziz was an opportunity to assess his level of English in speaking, writing and reading. We introduced ourselves and in order to get a good understanding of where his level was I worked through the diagnostic questions provided to us. As I asked each question, I would ask Abdulazziz to elaborate on his answers. He claimed to be shy but after a few minutes and positive comments he seemed more comfortable and his speaking improved. He voiced his desire to improve his pronunciation and conversational speaking ability. Abdulazziz hopes to improve his English in order to make friends and go to the FSU masters program. His speaking level of English is somewhere between intermediate/upper intermediate with his understanding of the language to be solid. He emailed me a few of his writing samples as well. His ability to structure an essay is great and he has a strong understanding of how American essays are laid out, however, his spelling and grammar weaknesses are evident. We closed out our lesson by discussing his goals for our time together. Abdulazziz wants to improve his writing and speaking abilities, with a primary focus on pronunciation. We talked about which sounds and particular words he struggles with. I plan to go and look into which sounds native Arabic speakers struggle with in general for future reference. The plan will be to work through some minimal pairings and develop some conversational goals for the duration of the course. He also wants to work on his personal statement for his master's program together.
Spelling, grammar and pronunciation, good need-assessment working in personal goals; he seems motivated. I'm still playing with the minimal pairs from Prof. Kim, and I wonder if the mnemonic method that I learned the Japanese alphabet with wasn't a cross-lingual minimal-pair based method. I can't speak of it coming from German because many of the words are the same in English.
