I met with Saad today for our first tutoring session. He has just finished moving into Tallahassee to start preparing for the semester. He is from Saudi Arabia and has been here in the US since 2019. He hopes to start studying business law at FSU. He has pretty good speaking skills as we were able to hold a good conversation. He admits he is a bad reader, we did a reading exercise where he read a passage I selected. I told him to email me his answers and a short email about his last vacation in Houston so I can assess his writing skills. Overall it was a good first meeting and he seems to be excited about classes and the tutoring.

  1. I wonder if anyone remembers cursive, or script writing, the flowing and connected type of hand-writing no one uses anymore. I then also wonder if this impacts the fact that he can speak better than he reads. Our letters must look harsh, edgy and sharp for someone who comes from an Arabic speaking place, which is a language that looks more like it has to be drawn than written; it's soft and flows and full of rounded shapes and edges. Good idea asking for some writing for evaluation, and asking him to write about a vacation.
