TS 9/25/20

            Today I met with Hongru and we did a speaking exercise. We used TOEFL speaking practice questions to do the exercise. First, I read the prompt and had him prepare his response, and then listened to his response. I noticed that he didn’t have a smooth transition, so we went over some transition words and how to use them. Then I gave him some time to go back and edit his initial response with transition words and then say it again. He was able to make his speaking sound clearer and smooth with the use of transitions. We also did a very quick syllable drill since he mentioned that he is struggling with syllables especially for his speech with Dr. Kennell. We are planning to do more syllable drills and cover phonetic symbols in our next session.

CP 10/9/20

Today I met with Marcia. She talked about how she is working on her applications for different graduate schools. She talked about how she applied to some schools in South Korea and other schools in Canada. She mentioned how it is exhausting to work on all these applications. I then started discussing with her how I always wanted to have a deep southern accent. She was shocked to hear this since she has always tried to overcome her accent in English. I talked to her about how it makes you sound different and adds diversity. After that, we ended up talking about the TEFL internship program and how she thinks Dr. Rios is a really good teacher. She thinks that his ability to understand where the students are coming from really makes him an effective teacher.
