TS#2 Abdulazziz September 10, 2020 7 pm – 8 pm
This was my first “proper” session with Abdulazziz. I prepared a document that I shared with him on the screen. The document was a layout of what we would be covering in the lesson. The first thing we reviewed was the ‘p’ versus ‘b’ sounds. I described to him how mechanically they sound different and how you motion your throat and tongue to make the different sounds. In order to explain this better to him, I had him watch a short youtube video in Arabic which helped explain the differences better than I could. Next we worked through various words with b and p sounds side by side for him to hear and understand how to make the different sounds. We did an exercise pronouncing silent letters, consonant clusters and adding vowels to words. The next exercise was a minimal pairs example game where he would say words like glamour then grammar. This was done with the ‘gr’ vs ‘gl’ sounds, ‘f’ vs ‘v’ sounds and finally the
‘b’ vs ‘p’ sounds. Abdulazziz then used each word in a sentence for context and practice. Finally we completed the session by working through two tongue twisters which he seemed to enjoy. The tongue twister he struggled with most was the one that focused on the ‘p’ sound, as we expected. Next class we will come back to the minimal pairings and tongue twisters.
I just realized that p isn't a sound you hear in Arabic and I had to look it up to make sure, but I knew it because I heard it enough here and there growing up. Interesting. You have a good lessons arc started here. Good idea on using tongue twisters.
