TS - SANGHUN - October 9, 2020
Sanghun started the lesson with our usual warmup. He told me about his pre-prepared topic which was about his favorite foods and beers again. We had discussed this in an earlier lesson but now he was able to elaborate a lot more. He told me about his favorite dishes in South Korea as well as his favorite dishes from his trip to Japan. He also mentioned his favorite chain in the States was Five Guys. I then showed him the prepared presentation Paul and I did on idioms. I took him through it and worked through the exercises together. He seemed to not fully understand all of the idioms and I am sure it will take time for him to properly use them in conversational dialogue but it was good for him to see what they are and how they are used. I feel like I threw too many examples at him at first and therefore will limit the idioms that I introduce him to going forward. I don't want to overload him with it and frustrate him. Nonetheless, he seemed to enjoy the exercise and had a lot of questions today. We then did our normal question and answer with a guided conversation exercise. Today our topics were: homework, humor, personality, food and travel. Over the weeks many of the topics have overlapped, however, this was done purposefully in order to track his improvement. He is definitely speaking more confidently and clearly and seems to be enjoying our dialogues. Today was a great session, however, I definitely need to limit the number of idioms I give to students at once. As I said, giving too many examples can be harmful to their intrinsic motivation. I am glad I observed and will learn from this going forward.
